If you get your CBT at 16, you can upgrade to a limited 50cc bike at 17. After the age of 19 you can upgrade to an A1 licence that permits you to ride a 125cc motorcycle without L plates or carry passengers.
The A2 is an upgrade from the A1 and is available either by passing a direct access to the theory and practice test or upgrading from an A1 after two years.
A1 Licence
The open road, the breeze in your hair, the excitement of riding a motorcycle. There's nothing quite like it, however before you can enjoy the freedom that comes with it, there is a crucial first step to make getting your A1 licence.
The A1 is the first step on the licensing ladder. It allows you to ride motorcycles and mopeds up to 125cc and with the maximum power output of 11 kW. It's available starting at 17 years old and is a great option for those who want to begin their motorbike journey in an accessible manner.
To obtain an A1 license to be granted, you must complete the Compulsory Base Training (CBT) and pass a test on theory and two-part exam. The CBT course offers essential motorcycle training, and helps prepare you for the theory and practical tests. You can schedule your test online on the official website of the Government and use this site to verify or alter your appointment and then rebook if required.
To pass your A1 test, you will require the assistance of an instructor who is certified in motorcycles. The test should take about 20 minutes and will include modules 1 and 2. Module 1 is held at the training center and focuses on off-road manoeuvres such as controlled stop, a slalom or the figure eight. The rest of the test will be conducted on the roads and will test your ability to control a motorbike at speed.
Module 2 will focus on riding the motorcycle through traffic and navigating junctions. You will be tested on your ability to follow road signs, and comprehend and follow the rules of the road. A2 Licence
The A2 Licence represents the second step to obtaining a full motorbike licence. The A2 licence is a restricted one and can only be obtained by those who are 19 or over and possessing an active CBT. It permits riders to ride motorcycles with an maximum power output of 47 BHP however, motorcycles that produce more than this limit can be restricted up to 94 BHP.
If you choose to go the A2 route, you'll be required to pass Module 1 and Module 2 of your motorcycle test. Both tests can be booked at the same place that you take your CBT course or the theory test. The A2 route is best suited to riders who passed their CBT course fairly quickly and are prepared financially and experientially for a larger bike.
The first module of the A2 motorcycle test is an indoor one in which you will learn how to control your bike, including emergency stops and slow speed manoeuvring. Then, you will take the on-road section of the test, where you'll be required to demonstrate hazard avoidance exercises as well as road positioning. A3 Licence
The A2 Licence allows riders to move up to larger bikes that have more power. It also offers extra perks that aren't available with the CBT like riding on motorways and transporting passengers. You can upgrade from CBT to the A2 licence through additional training and passing the relevant exam. The A2 licence is valid for two years and can be upgraded to a full, unlimited A licence after another two years.
The first step in obtaining your A2 license is to be able to pass the Compulsory Base Training (CBT) test as well as the Motorcycle Theory Test. After you have met the requirements, you're ready to take the Module 1 or Module 2 practical test. The module 1 practical test tests your ability to safely ride on a closed circuit while the module 2 test consists of maneuvers on the open road.

The A1 and A2 licences are different from the rest of the motorbike licenses because they are restricted by weight-to-power ratio not engine cc's. This means that even 600cc bikes may still be A2 conforming, particularly when they have restrictor kits fitted. However, not all bikes that claim to be A2 conforming will actually be, so it's best to conduct some research prior to deciding to purchase one.
A4 Licence
The A4 Licence enables motorists to drive vehicles with more than three wheels. This licence includes buses, trucks and coaches. It also covers vehicles that transport dangerous products. Drivers must pass a criminal record test to qualify for the licence.
